The Celtics announced Friday that Paul Pierce will be coming back to the Celtics. He could every well finish his career in the place it all started.
Terms of the deal weren't immediately disclosed, but The Boston Herald, who first reported the signing, said that the deal would be somewhere around a 4-year/$61 million contract with an option for the fourth year.
Pierce, the 2008 Finals MVP, will more than likely finish his great career in Boston. Being selected by the Celtics in the 1998 draft, Pierce is slowly racking up the years, even though he has been playing great basketball.
I never thought that Pierce would actually leave the Celtics, as he was probably just testing the free agent market. His signing seemed to me that it was inevitable, with the Celtics announcing earlier this week that they would bring back Head Coach, Doc Rivers. With both people coming back, I think that Ray Allen will go back to the Celtics also and try to give the Lakers a run, in hopes of interrupting a Lakers' three-peat.
However, I think the Celtics are on the decline because their core players are slowly, but surely, getting older as the days go on. Kevin Garnett really has no knees left and Ray Allen, one of the greatest shooters ever, is simply just getting older. They may have one more shot left to win a championship and it will probably be the last one for "The Big Three".
They will more than likely make the playoffs next year, but I don't see them getting back to the Finals with an up-and-coming team like Milwaukee and other teams that have shots to sign marquee free agents like Chicago, Miami, New York, and New Jersey.
Pierce is the glue that sticks the team together. He's an emotional leader and a great player and if he didn't come back, Boston would be in deep trouble. But, since he's returning, the Celtics have a decent shot at going back to the Finals, and maybe win one more championship.
