It was reported earlier today that the Texans have waived quarterback Kellen Clemens, who thy signed last week to serve as the team's back-up to T.J. Yates and Jake Delhomme.
The transaction left the Texans with just two quarterbacks on the roster, but it didn't last long as the team announced that they have signed former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia.
Garcia played for current Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp in San Francisco, where he was a Pro Bowler and led the 49ers to a playoff appearance in 2002. The 49ers reached the playoffs this season, the first time that has occurred since Garcia led them almost ten years ago.
Over the last few weeks, Garcia had worked out for the Texans twice but they failed to sign him.
Garcia played in the UFL last season and has completely been out of football for 2011 until today.
Garcia is set to be the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart behind Delhomme and Yates. He could very well take over the No. 2 spot over Delhomme if he shows he has some left in the tank.
From 1999-2009, Garcia played for 49ers, Browns, Lions, Eagles and Buccaneers, respectively.
He has career numbers of 25,537 passing yards, 161 touchdowns and 83 interceptions. He has also completed 2,264 of 3,676 passes (61.6%). Over his career, he started 116 games and has a 58-58 record.
Garcia's best season came in 2000 with the 49ers when he completed 63.3% of his passes for 4,278 yards and 31 touchdowns, along with ten interceptions. He also ran for 414 yards and four touchdowns.
